Everyone’s Harvest is proud to offer healthy interactive cooking workshops which teach community members about nutrition, fresh produce, active living and local small-scale family farmers. These workshops bring chefs and families together in Everyone’s Harvest’s outdoor kitchen to prepare and cook healthy recipes using fresh fruits and vegetables from the farmers’ market. Families come into Everyone’s Harvest outdoor kitchen at the Farmers’ Market, and along with a professional chef prepare a healthy recipe to enjoy on-site. Workshops are FREE TO THE PUBLIC and participants receive farmers’ market vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. All ages are encouraged to participate! The program is largely made possible through grant funding. A big thank you to our program funders: The Nancy Buck Ransom Foundation, United States Department of Agriculture Farmers Market Promotion Program and Monterey County Gives!

History

Everyone’s Harvest’s Healthy Interactive Cooking Workshops grew out of EH’s Edible Education for Healthy Youth program, started in 2010. Everyone’s Harvest began as an organization to increase access to fresh, local, organic, healthy foods. It became apparent over time that access was only one part of the equation–education was also necessary to help show people the benefits of fresh produce and how to incorporate more of it into their diets.
In 2010, Edible Education was launched as a youth program called Edible Education for Healthy Youth. The program offered 12 sessions at our Certified Farmers’ Markets. In these sessions, participants:
- Connected with local Certified small-scale farmers
- Learned about the nutritional value of produce and how to make healthier eating choices while engaging in fitness activities
- Gained experience and culinary skills in preparing healthy meals using fresh fruit and vegetables from local Certified Farmers’ Markets.
Everyone’s Harvest has since expanded our Edible Ed program to the Pueblo del Mar community in Marina and to families at large to connect not only to youth, but to the whole family to support long-lasting healthy eating habits.
Through the end of 2012, Edible Ed also worked with afterschool programs in Monterey County, offering hands-on nutrition education sessions to youth. These programs taught and inspired kids to lead active, healthy lives while preparing and tasting farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, learning about nutrition, and engaging in physical activity. This program also included delivery of fresh produce and Farmers’ Market Vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at Everyone’s Harvest Certified Farmers’ Markets.

Food Justice Workshop Series
Everyone’s Harvest was proud to offer a new series of Food Justice Workshops in 2013. Sparked by a partnership with CSUMB Service Learning Institute, Everyone’s Harvest Food Justice workshops encouraged people’s critical exploration of the food system. Using the farmers markets as a base framework we examined: our own food histories, community gardens, tribal food restoration, ALBA (Agricultural and Land Based-Training Association), and CHAMACOS (Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas) study to name a few.
